Understanding Dental Check-Up and Clean

A preventive visit combines examination with practical maintenance. Your dentist looks for decay, cracks, failing restorations, gum inflammation, tooth wear and changes in the mouth that may need review.

Professional cleaning removes plaque and tartar from areas that are difficult to reach at home. The visit is also a chance to discuss sensitivity, bleeding gums, dry mouth, jaw discomfort, diet, fluoride and any changes you have noticed.

Who this may suit

  • Routine preventive care for adults and teenagers
  • Bleeding gums, bad breath or tartar build-up
  • Monitoring fillings, crowns and previous dental treatment
  • Patients with sensitivity, dry mouth or tooth wear
  • People who have not attended for some time

What your dentist will assess

  • Teeth, restorations and early signs of decay
  • Gum health and periodontal risk
  • Bite, jaw joints and signs of grinding
  • Oral soft tissues and an oral cancer screening
  • Need for X-rays based on history and clinical findings

What to expect

Update and listen

Review medical history, medicines, dental concerns and changes since the last visit.

Examine

Check teeth, gums, bite and soft tissues, with X-rays only when clinically justified.

Clean and polish

Remove plaque and tartar, then polish stains when appropriate and comfortable.

Prevention plan

Discuss findings, home care, fluoride, diet and a recall interval based on risk.

Preparing and caring for your result

Before or during treatment

  • Bring an updated medicine list and relevant health information.
  • Tell the dentist about bleeding, sensitivity, pain or jaw symptoms.
  • Continue normal brushing before the visit.
  • If you are anxious, let the team know so the appointment can be paced accordingly.

After-care and maintenance

  • Mild gum tenderness can occur after a thorough clean if gums were inflamed.
  • Brush twice daily with fluoride toothpaste and clean between teeth.
  • Follow any specific gum, fluoride or sensitivity advice.
  • Book recommended treatment or review rather than waiting for symptoms.

A six-month recall is common but not universal. Some patients benefit from shorter intervals and others may be suitable for longer intervals. Your dentist will recommend timing based on current risk.

Common questions

How often should I have a check-up?

It depends on decay risk, gum health, medical factors, previous treatment and home care. Your dentist will recommend an interval after assessment.

Do I need X-rays at every visit?

No. X-rays are taken when they are likely to provide useful information that cannot be seen directly. Type and timing are based on individual need.

Why do my gums bleed?

Bleeding is often linked with gum inflammation from plaque, but other factors can contribute. A check-up helps identify the cause and the right cleaning plan.

Will a professional clean whiten my teeth?

Cleaning can remove plaque, tartar and some surface stain, so teeth may look fresher. It does not change the internal colour like whitening treatment.

What if I feel nervous about dental visits?

Tell the team when booking. Clear explanations, agreed signals, breaks and a gradual approach can make preventive care more manageable.
